Beach Bag Necessities

Who’s ready to kick off the summer?! I know I certainly am! And what better way to do that then spending Memorial Day at the beach? Although I am working all weekend, I can at least think about how much fun that would be!

If you are like me, the biggest pain about going to the beach is packing for the beach. What do I wear? What if I don’t bring enough outfits? What will I forget this time? etc…

So in honor of this weekend, and all you lucky gals making your way to the beach, I thought it might be helpful to share my beach bag essentials.

  1. Most important is the beach bag! I try to keep mine small so I can’t bring as much stuff. This Lilly Pulitzer beach bag was a lovely birthday gift from a friend. My favorite thing about it? It’s lined with soft plastic making it easy to clean!
  2. I bring a smaller cosmetic bag for all of my sunscreen. This striped one from Vera Bradley is also lined with plastic, so if my sunscreen explodes -I am covered! Which leads to…IMG_6389
  3. Sunscreen! I am very picky when it comes to sunscreen. I need to have my SPF 30 lip balm (if you’ve had sun burnt lips, you know they’re terrible), oil-free face sunscreen and SPF 30 lotion sunscreen. I like to use Banana Boat’s dry oil with argan oil. This is lightweight and helps with my tan but the dry oil formula also leaves my skin feeling smooth. (Available at drugstores in SPF 4, 8, 15 and 25).
  4. I make sure to have a pair of beach sandals that can get wet and sandy. There is nothing worse than not having a pair of “knock around” flip-flops and having to wear your good ones to the beach! I recommend these from Lilly Pulitzer.
  5. Don’t forget a water bottle to keep you hydrated. This stainless steel one from Vera Bradley keeps my drink cold all day and doesn’t sweat! It’s also lightweight and BPA free. (Get it here –also available in blue).
  6. Some light reading always helps me relax. If it’s not a good book I am reading, it’s probably a fashion mag!
  7. I can NOT go to the beach without a hat! My face is extremely sensitive to the sun, so wearing a hat helps protect me from getting sunburn. (There’s nothing worse than a red, peeling face). I snagged this one from Francesca’s for only $20 on sale!
  8. Koozies! (This is a given -normally I bring extras just in case)!

Once you have your bag packed and you’re ready to roll, it’s time to pick out your suit. Even though it’s Memorial Day, I never really like wearing the stars and stripes on my bathing suit – it’s just not a good look for me. Instead, I opt for a more subtle bathing suit that incorporates the red, white & blue.

IMG_6391Try this one from Everything But Water

If you live up North and are spending the weekend at the beach, it will probably be a little bit cooler so you may want to try a cute one piece. This is one of my favs:

IMG_6390Also from Everything but Water and comes in 3 additional colors!

Regardless of where you are going or what you are doing this weekend, I hope everyone has a happy, fun and safe Memorial Day!

Everything But Your Jeans

The time has come for you to rethink the way you wear denim. It is one of this summer’s MUST-have fabrics. Wear it to work, a casual brunch, a date or a night out on the town… the possibilities are endless! And what better time than now to experiment with different denim pieces?!

Here are some of my favorite denim trends that I can’t wait to try:

  1. Denim jacket > I know this isn’t technically a ‘new’ trend, but it’s about time I brought my denim jacket back to the front of my closet! This can add a relaxed edge to any outfit and is perfect to take you from a hot day to a cool summer night. I have a feeling that you will be seeing a lot more of the denim jacket -it’s the perfect piece to transition into the fall.
  2. A denim skirt > News alert: denim skirts have gotten a makeover! When I think of denim skirts, I picture the short tattered things that girls (myself included) used to wear in high school. Not anymore! The denim skirt has gotten a classy new look. Try pairing an a-line midi with a textured/lace top. This is one of my favorites from H&M and it’s only $30! skirt
  3. Denim shoes > I may have a slight obsession with shoes… so when I started seeing denim shoes popping up in stores, I got really excited to experiment with this new trend. I have seen everything from distressed denim shoes to classy and chic styles. Check out my favorite here.

My personal preference for the summer: embroidered denim dresses! This dress is one of my favorites, not only because I scored it for under $40, but because I can glam it up for a night out or dress it down for a more casual vibe.

Dress: Nordstrom, sold out, $38 (similar, similar)
Shoes: Vince Camuto, old (similar, similar)
Cuff: My Stella & Dot, $98 (almost identical – only $30!)
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff, $130 (similar, similar)
Earrings: Kendra Scott, $65 (similar)

Shoes: Converse, $50 (similar)

*These shoes are on my must have list! I have gotten so much wear out of them. I even bought the same exact pair for my sister! They also go great with denim!

For a similar style, try a light blue cotton dress -you can’t even tell that it’s not denim! This is a great alternative if you’re not a huge fan of denim, but still want to experiment with this style.

Dress: Lord & Taylor, $38 (similar)
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff, (similar, similar)
Shoes: Seychelles, 6 years ago

One, $69  |  Two, $45 –ON SALE  |  Three, $10  |  Four, $98  |  Five, $122

I would love to hear some other denim trends that you all are trying! I recently started my Instagram page (@artfullychic) and Twitter page (@Artfully_Chic) so tag me and show me your faves!

Tips For Cleaning Your Closet

Your style significantly changes over the years. Especially from college to the working world. For most of us (myself included) it can be hard to let go and transition into that next chapter of our lives. A large part of that transition is adjusting your style and getting rid of items that don’t fit you and/or your new lifestyle. When cleaning out your wardrobe, ask yourself the following questions to figure out whether or not something is worth keeping:

What’s the condition?

To me, the most important thing is quality. When going through each piece of clothing, ask yourself, “is this in good condition?” If the answer is no -ditch it. This may include picks/tears in the fabric, stains, holes, etc. For these items, you don’t even need to try them on -they can go straight into the Goodwill bag.

Is this in style?

Style is important and it’s always good to stay up to date with the latest trends. If your piece of clothing passes the quality test, ask yourself if it’s in style. I try to keep classic pieces that will always be in style and can be paired with just about anything. These are items you definitely want to hold on to!

For those unique pieces that used to be in style a few years ago, it’s not likely that they will come back into style. If they do, it will be years down the road and chances are, the style will be slightly different. These items are usually not worth keeping. HOWEVER, you may have some things that were last year’s trend, but you wear them all the time -these are ok to keep! Just because something may be a little outdated, doesn’t mean you need to get rid of it, as long as it’s relevant to your current taste and style.

This leads into the next question…

Is this applicable to your daily life?

Basically you need to ask yourself if the item of clothing is practical. If it’s an old formal dress from years ago that you only wore once, the answer is probably not.

The best way to do this is to make a list of daily and weekly activities. Do you work in a corporate office where you need to dress professionally? Do you need workout clothes if you go to the gym? Or party clothes for nights out on the weekend? Maybe the answer is yes to all of the above. However, if anything changes in your personal and/or professional life, you need to be ok with letting some things go.

This is the HARDEST thing for me. I don’t like letting go of things, and my clothing/style is a large part of my identity -so purging my closet is always a little sad for me. The best way I stay on track is reminding myself how much better I will feel with a closet that isn’t so cluttered. Also, by donating things, someone else may be able to get a lot more use from it than I would if it was still hanging in my closet untouched!

TIP: If you have something you love, but you have not worn it in over a year, donate it. If you haven’t worn it in a year -you likely never will.

Does it fit?

So your clothing is in good quality, it’s in style and relevant to your daily life -but, does it fit you properly? Try it on. This may take a while to try everything -but if you are unsure how something fits -you NEED to try it on.

If something doesn’t fit properly and you don’t feel confident in it, say goodbye.

My best advice I can give here is to be brutally honest. Sometimes it helps to have a family member or friend with you.

If you bought a top to go with a certain printed skirt but it’s too tight around the arms -it isn’t the right top for you. If you feel uncomfortable in a dress you spent a lot of money on (and that’s the only reason you are keeping it) try to resell it -but make sure it goes. You likely will never wear that dress if it doesn’t make you feel like a million bucks!

Hopefully these tips are helpful for that (late) spring cleaning. I know I have a lot of work to do!

Good Mornings Start With Coffee

I may have a slight obsession for a good cup of coffee in the morning. So much so, that a corner of my kitchen counter is my dedicated coffee bar. I often tell friends and family not to mess with me until I’ve had my coffee and I know that I am not alone!

This is how I justify my obsession:

  1. Coffee gives you energy
  2. Increases your adrenaline (more cals burned at the gym) -goodbye fat!
  3. MAY lower risk of diabetes and Alzheimer’s
  4. Protects your liver (maybe that’s why I feel better when I have a big cup of joe after a long night out)?
  5. Last but not least, it just makes me happy!

I wonder if you can guess what on earth inspired 2 of my latest art projects?!

FullSizeRender (1)
(Maybe i got some inspiration from wine on this one too). This is a canvas I painted to hang in my kitchen near the wine rack -love the cool typography!

(I will NEVER say no to Starbucks) This sign is featured above the coffee bar of course. I got this small chalkboard from Walmart for $3 and used a white paint pen for the graphics.

So my FAVORITE coffee flavor is Chocolate Glazed Donut by Donut House. I have tried some other brands but nothing is as amazing as Donut House. Add a little sugar free French vanilla Coffee Mate and you will not be disappointed. This cup of coffee tastes exactly like a chocolate donut (without all the calories). You are welcome!

I get mine from Bed, Bath & Beyond with those 20% off coupons. It’s also usually on sale at Publix Grocery Stores as well. Try it here!

Now that you have the perfect cup of coffee you need the perfect mug! This is my favorite mug from Altar’d State. I love the simplicity, the gold on white and the detailing. It’s also a lot bigger than it looks (4″ tall x 5″ wide)!

The Cold Shoulder

Ladies, get ready to bare your shoulders… spring has sprung! Every year with warmer weather comes shorter shorts and cropped tops, but this year you can go ahead and add the cold shoulder to that list.

I can’t even call this a trend since it is now a staple for any girl’s spring into summer wardrobe. I used to hate my shoulders and thought they were too broad for me to ever pull off the ‘cold shoulder’ look. However, the more I tried on these tops and dresses, the more I fell in love with this versatile look. So my advice to you: TRY it! There is an overwhelming feeling of confidence you will get when rocking this look.

One of my favorites is this Lilly Pulitzer top (also comes in pink). I can wear this to work and pull the sleeves up for a more professional look.

Off the Shoulder Top: Lilly Pulitzer, $148 (similar, similar)
Red Pants: Express, $69
Nude Flats: Gianni Bini, $35 on sale
Leather Bag: Tory Burch, old (similar, similar)
Necklace: Stella & Dot, old (similar)
Cuff: Stella & Dot, old (similar)
Earrings: Stella & Dot, old (similar)

OR, I can pull the sleeves down for a more chic style when I meet the girls for a post-work happy hour. Because of the lace texture on the top, I like keeping it simple on the bottom with a colorful pair of skinny jeans. This allows me to coordinate my shoes and jewelry to match the pants. I also love the lace detail and scalloped hem.

Green pants: Forever 21, old (similar)
Clutch: Francesca’s, old (similar, similar)
Shoes: Steve Madden, $89
Necklace: Stella & Dot, old (similar, similar)
Earrings: Kate Spade, $38

Another top option is one that’s off the shoulder but still has straps for support. This black top is super comfortable and comes in 2 other colors! The lightweight material also makes it perfect for summer. I wore this on my April trip to Charleston, SC. It was a little chilly at night so I definitely appreciated having the sleeves at dinner time!

Black Top: Vince Camuto, $89

Here are a few of my other favorite off the shoulder options:

One, $56  |  Two, $19  |  Three, $198  |  Four, $58  |  Five, $138 |  Six, $58

My $10 Rule

You’re out shopping with some girlfriends just for fun (nothing in particular) and you find this gorgeous dress for $150. You don’t know when you will wear it but it’s so beautiful you just HAVE to have it. This happens to us all the time! Is this dress REALLY worth the price you’re going to pay?

Take the price of something you are thinking about purchasing. Divide it by the number of times you KNOW you will wear it. If that price is $10 or under, it’s a good investment and you will get your money’s worth. Under $15 is also reasonable if your budget allows. Anything over $25 is simply not worth it. This goes for jewelry and accessories too.

I understand that sometimes there will be exceptions to this rule (I have definitely broken it before) but it all depends on your budget and how much you are willing to spend. My $10 rule is mostly applied to everyday staples such as a white dress shirt, a nice pair of denim jeans or a plain black dress for work.

Special events such as weddings and graduations may call for a higher price point and that’s perfectly fine but it’s all about BALANCE. Applying this rule while shopping definitely prevents last minute impulse buys and also eliminates buyers remorse.

Here are some of my favorite investment pieces that are totally worth it –(your go to plain top, diamond studs, a black blazer, little black dress and the perfect pair of jeans).

(comes in 12 colors)!  |  Two  |  Three  |  Four  |  Five

P.S. This rule also applies to men who are wardrobe shopping… be sure to share!

Happy shopping!

Spring Trend Alert: Lace-ups!

One of the newest trends this season (and also one of my favorites) is the lace-up shoe. You know, the ones that criss-cross and wrap/tie around the ankle. (Or if you’re Kendall Jenner at the MTV Movie Awards -they wrap around the thigh)!

This trend is heating up because they are so versatile. Block lace up heels can be worn around the office and easily transition into a night out. Lace-up flats create a subtle sexy vibe and could be dressed up if you want to forego the heels or dress them down for a casual brunch.

My favorite colors are the neutral ones that can be paired with anything. If you want to go for some colored lace-ups make sure to keep it simple up top. Regardless, this is one staple for the spring and summer that will take your look to the next level. Some of my favorite obsessions are pairing these shoes with shorts or skinny jeans.
