11 Tips to Shopping a Sale

4thofjulysale

Just because something is on sale, doesn’t make it less fashionable.

Fourth of July weekend is almost here! And of course in the retail world, that means numerous sales. However, shopping these “sales” can sometimes get you in trouble and have you spending a lot more money than you normally would. If you plan to shop this weekend, I have 11 tips to help you shop savvy and score big without breaking the bank.

  1. Make a List
    • If you haven’t gone through your closet in a while, now is the perfect time. Get rid of clothes that don’t fit, clothes you don’t wear and/or are out of style and clothes that aren’t in good condition. For tips on cleaning out your closet, view Tips for Cleaning Your Closet. This will give you a good idea of what you don’t have and what you need. It’s good to make a list to keep you from purchasing things you don’t need and gives you specific items to focus on while shopping.
  2. Plan ahead
    • Plan what stores you want to go to ahead of time and find out what kind of sales they are having. This will keep you from entering other stores where you don’t need anything and wasting your time/money. It also helps to know which time of year to shop certain sale items -such as shopping the end of a season. It’s a good rule of thumb to buy winter clothes in March and Summer clothes in October (if you need them).
  3. Do your research online
    • Browse these stores online to give you an idea of what you will be looking for. It’s nice to shop online and see the store’s merchandise without a salesperson bothering you and trying to sell you on something you don’t need. Also check online coupon sites (such as couponcabin.com and retailmenot.com) to see if there are any additional coupons you can tack on to your purchase. Sometimes this may require signing up for a store’s emails (you can always unsubscribe later).
  4. Set a Time Frame
    • Set a time frame for your shopping outing. This will keep you from wandering aimlessly and ending up in a store where you will probably spend money on something that you probably don’t need. I like to set a lunch/dinner date at a certain time to keep me in check.
  5. Create a Budget
    • Yes, I said it: budget. Having a budget is NOT a bad thing! After assessing your needs, the stores you will go to and their sales, create a realistic budget that makes you comfortable and is realistic to your lifestyle. Now stick to it!
  6. Pay in Cash
    • Take your budget out of your bank account in cash. It’s been proven time and again that shoppers tend to spend more if they are paying with plastic.
  7. Go Alone
    • Shopping with friends tends to lead us to purchase things we don’t really want. Friends tend to make us feel better about making larger, more expensive purchases. This will lead you to bring home items you don’t really need and blowing your budget. If you do decide to take someone, make sure they are honest and aware of your budget ahead of time.
  8. Know the Return Policy
    • Every store is different. For example, a lot of jewelry stores don’t even take returns and will only give you store credit. With clearance, a lot of other stores have different policies from their normal ones (usually shorter time periods to get your money back). It’s always good to be aware of each store’s policy just in case something doesn’t work out.
  9. Don’t Buy It Just Because It’s On Sale
    • This is my most important tip. Impulse buys lead to buyer remorse. You may buy a shirt you don’t really need because it WAS $60 but NOW it’s only $20. Keep in mind that $20 here, and $30 there quickly adds up. Keep your receipts for these purchases, in the event that you change your mind.
  10. Be Patient
    1. Take your time! If you aren’t finding something on your list that you LOVE, it’s okay to wait. I am a list person myself, and I LOVE crossing things off my list. I remember a time several years ago that I bought something I didn’t love just because it was on sale and I needed to cross it off my list. I ended up getting little use out of the item because I wasn’t in love with it. What’s worse, is the next time I went shopping I found that same exact item back on my list.
  11. Don’t Shop When You Are Upset
    1. Just like you’ve heard not to grocery shop when you are hungry, don’t shop when you are upset or emotional. This can lead to “over-shopping” and buying things you don’t need. There is an instant (but fleeting) gratification you feel when you buy something. Being upset or emotional can lead to more purchases that will make you feel better in the meantime, but end up regretting later.

When in doubt on whether or not to purchase something, refer back to my $10 rule. Hopefully these tips will have you shopping smarter and saving money!

Check back later this week to see a list of my favorite stores and deals they are having over the weekend!

LBR = The Little Black Romper

We all know that it’s important to have that “LBD” (little black dress) go-to piece in our wardrobe. You know the one you could wear to a wedding, a night out on the town, dinner, work, etc. However, you rarely hear about the little black romper, which in my opinion is underrated and has become my new favorite staple for the summer!

LBR: Nordstrom, $30 -Just went on sale! (small fit)
Necklace: My Stella & Dot, $59 (similar)
Earrings: My Stella & Dot, $34 (similar for $14!)
Bag: Rebecca Minkoff, $195 (similar, similar)
Shoes: Sam Edelman, $130 (similar for ONLY $30!)

I am loving the crochet lace on the popover up top and the adjustable tie straps. (The strap ties were originally sewn together but I was able to cut the thread and make them adjustable). The crinkled cotton material is extremely comfortable and the flared out shorts makes your legs look slimmer! I know I will definitely be loving the sun in this cute number at the beach next week! 🙂

Shop similar LBR’s below:

Zip-Up Racer Back Dress

I am loving this new twist on the racerback dress: the zip-up racerback! The only thing better than this dress, was the price I paid for it… see below!

Dress: Nordstrom, $28 SALE! (similar)
Shoes: Tory Burch Chandler Sandal, old (similar, similar)
Bag: Francesca’s, old (similar, similar)
Necklace: My Stella & Dot, old (similar)
Earrings: My Stella & Dot, old (similar)
Bracelets: Bauble Bar: Bangle, $28, Fringe set, $58
Hand Bracelet: Kendra Scott, $45 (similar –$25 SALE from Kendra)

This neutral, bold pattern was perfect for me! It gave me some room to be creative and pick a muted color in the pattern and bring it out with accessories (my necklace and earrings). The open back adds a sultry touch, but the rayon material makes it light and airy -perfect for a hot day.

My only reservation was that the dress was a little short. I do however have about an inch that I could let it out and for $28 I just couldn’t pass it up. Its pieces like these that go to show you that you can still look fabulous on a budget!

I also thought of a way to dress this piece up a little bit to give you a more sophisticated day to night look:

ZipUpRacerback

Blazer: Target, $30  |  Earrings: Kendra Scott, $55  |  Shoes: INC, $50 on SALE

What are some of the other ways that you would style this dress? Leave a comment and let me know, I would love to hear from ya’ll! Hope everyone has an amazing week!

New Accessory Line!

Express is one of my favorite clothing stores –especially for work wear. Their clothes are sleek and tailored, but also stylish. Their work wear line allows me to dress professionally, while embracing my unique style.

It came as a complete shock to me when they recently released a Home & Travel accessory line –but I could not be more excited! This was definitely a bold move on their part and only time will tell if it will pay off. However, I will say that I am loving these chic additions!

Shop the line and view products coming soon here

These are some of my favorites that I wanted to share:

Exp1

Bag: Rebecca Minkoff, sold out (similar, similar)
Cuff: My Stella & Dot, $98 (similar)
Tear drop earrings: Kendra Scott, $65 (similar –only $5!)

I wore this dress to a friend’s graduation ceremony and celebratory dinner afterwards. I love the high neck and navy embroidered detailing – it gives the dress a glam, vintage look. The swing dress style is also extremely flattering for all body types. The cut out in the back adds a fun, flirty touch that I just love! The material is very light and airy as well, which kept me cool while taking pictures in the summer heat.

I played up the delicate navy embroidery with navy wedges and a navy cross body bag. I love mixing different tones of colors together. On another note, I bet you would have never guessed that I got this dress for UNDER $50! I could not believe it myself… it was perfect for the graduation ceremony and I also plan to wear it to a friend’s wedding next month.

See below for some of my other favorite high neck swing dresses:

Treadmill, Shredmill

I hate the treadmill. I try to avoid it at all costs. However, an afternoon thunderstorm here and there have left me with no choice but to get my run on inside. Although it’s not ideal, running on a treadmill is better than not running at all.

After doing some research on different treadmill workouts, I was surprised at how many I found that I actually liked! When I look for a treadmill workout, I try to stick to short, high intensity routines (also known as HIIT – High Intensity Interval Training). Personally, I would rather have an intense 30 minute workout than an easy 1 hour workout.

Doing a quick 30 minute workout with various speed intervals at different inclines can actually burn more calories than an hour at the same pace and incline.

Additional benefits I found:

  • Builds endurance
  • Boosts metabolism (burn more calories at a faster rate)
  • Burns more fat
  • Switch up your workouts with different cardio equipment
  • Builds muscle
  • Strengthens your heart (decreased risk for heart disease)

This is one of my go to workouts (it’s only 30 minutes) that I got from a friend a few months ago. Sometimes I only do the treadmill part – other times I will include a few sets of the warm up. Either way, it’s super intense but totally worth it!

HIIT_IT

Although this particular work out is more for runners looking to build speed and endurance, there are plenty of other routines out there geared toward building muscle.

If you have a workout similar to this, please feel free to share in the comments! I would love to try it. Can’t wait to hear from you all!

Wear Black This Summer!

Warmer weather is just around the corner and a lot of people have the preconceived notion that you shouldn’t wear black this summer.

Spring/summer in the fashion world normally means bright colors and bold florals. Although I love both of these trends, for some reason I always gravitate towards more neutral colors like white, gray, taupe and especially black. It goes with anything and I just love the timeless, classy color.

Side note: There used to be that rule where you couldn’t wear white after Labor Day… but white was one of the hottest trends this WINTER! So in my opinion, rules were made to be broken. There are so many cute things you can do with black this summer and I can not wait to show them off!

One of my most loved looks is pairing a black top with white jeans. Whether you choose a black top or black skinnies, keeping your outfit colors neutral will allow you to experiment with bright colors for accessories.

DSCN0765

Try adding color with a statement necklace. I chose this pink one from Lilly Pulitzer (similar) but a mint green or light blue would also look great! I’m loving the fringe detail on the necklace (fringe is also super trendy this summer) so I decided to pair it with a set of fringe bracelets from bauble bar (below).

DSCN0766Bag: Rebecca Minkoff, gift – sold out (similar, similar)

This swing top has an unconventional shape with a shorter front and more length on the sides. This creates more of a statement than a straight hem.

DSCN0770

This is my favorite part! How cute is this open back?! I love how it adds an airy, cool, summer vibe. I also got it for under $25 at Nordstrom! I loved this top so much I ended up getting it in white too. (Similar top for $17 in 5 colors).

There are so many other options for wearing black this summer! Additional looks I can’t wait to try: a black crop top with a matching skirt, a short black romper and a black swim suit and matching hat for the beach. What are some other ways you plan to wear black this summer? Leave a comment -can’t wait to hear from you!
