High Waist & Crop Top

I love putting together new outfits that I normally wouldn’t try. Take for example this crop top and high waisted shorts combo. I rarely ever wear crop tops and I usually HATE high waisted pants/shorts since I have wide hips and they tend to make them look even wider. However, I paired these two pieces together anyway and I am actually loving the look!

The high waisted shorts elongates my torso and I love the lace-up detail (I think it adds a chic, trendy touch). The longer sleeves on the crop top are nice so they don’t make my shoulders look too broad. I think with the high waisted shorts, had I worn a sleeveless crop top, it wouldn’t have worked. If you aren’t comfortable wearing crop tops, you could always just wear a plain tee and tuck it in. I added the long necklace with orange/white fringe to bring the orange shorts and white top together.

I had so much fun taking these pictures, and my friend Katie found the perfect spot! These walls were so cool and the paintings were amazing –just one of many of Charlotte’s artistic scenes. It’s hard to tell in the pictures but it was pouring down rain so huge thanks to Katie for bearing with me and getting through it! That also explains my crazy hair in some of the shots, and why we didn’t get too many pics… 🙂

So here are all of my outfit details:
Top: Nordstrom, $9.50 on sale –now sold out (almost identical, love this)
Shorts: last season but I was able to find a similar pair for only $32 (originally $118!)
Bag: SheIn, $29 (similar)
Necklace: Baublebar, old (similar, similar, similar)
Watch: Michael Kors, gift (similar, similar)
Earrings: Kendra Scott, $55 (similar)
Bracelets: Bourbon & Boweties, $22+
Sandals: Tory Burch, gift (similar for $39)

I hope everyone is having a good Thursday! It’s ALMOST Friday –we’re so close! What are some style risks that you have taken? Whether it’s pairing two things together or trying something totally new… I would love to hear from you! Leave me a comment 🙂

Congrats Erin & Josh!

For those of you that know my mother, know she is a WONDERFUL hostess and she loves every bit of it. Last Sunday afternoon was no exception!

So many family members and friends came from all over the country to our little hometown in Maryland to celebrate the engagement of my brother Josh and his beautiful fiancé Erin. We had my uncles come in from Ohio and Kentucky, my grandma and cousins from Pennsylvania, Erin’s mom from Colorado, her brother from Pennsylvania, and family friends from Texas, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Florida!

We definitely had a full house (of company and food) and it was so much fun celebrating the love between these two kind hearted, genuine and amazing people!

Of course we had to make sure that everything was decorated perfectly. I spent most of Saturday (and some of Sunday morning) making signs… but of course you all know I love doing that ‘crafty’ stuff.

We had a nice mimosa and Bloody Mary bar set up, along with an elaborate dessert bar and a s’more bar by the fireplace (Erin’s favorite). The weather could not have been more beautiful and it was just an overall perfect day!

Here is the blood mary/mimosa bar:

We will definitely be doing this again! I LOVE mimosas and everyone else did too… this will be at my next house party for sure. Here is the dessert bar with the “Love is Sweet” Sign that I made. Homemade doughnuts and coffee cake were delicious and my mom’s infamous cheesecake bars went quickly! I also made the welcome sign at the front door with chalkboard paint… (that stuff is amazing)!

Below are some more of the decorations and delicious food –not to mention the over the top cheese plate my mom had me put together last minute:

The s’mores were also a huge hit –especially since it started to cool off at night. Throughout the day it was so good to spend some time with my family and get to know Erin’s family a little better. I had never met her brother Charles (who lives in Towson, MD) and he brought his daughter, (Erin’s niece) Virginia who is the SWEETEST and cutest little thing. I have never met such a happy baby!

and then there are the crazy ladies behind it all…

Seeing the turn out for this party shows how much love and support there is for these two already. I could not be more proud of my brother or more blessed to add another sister like Erin to our family! I have been lucky enough to watch their relationship grow over the last 6 years and can’t wait to see all of the exciting things that their future has in store!

Below are some more pictures from the party… enjoy!

Fall in the South

Happy first day of fall everyone!

In the words of my good friend Joanna on fall trends in the south, “it’s a real thing and it sucks.”

I know this may not apply to most of you… but what do you do when all of the retail stores come out with their fall lines in the beginning of August, and you live somewhere where it’s still 100º and hotter than ever?? It’s an issue that us ladies in the south have to deal with every year.

Instead of avoiding fall fashion completely.. I have come up with a few compromises that offer realistic alternatives to those staple fall pieces.

Instead of ankle booties, try:

All of these booties are from Macy’s – use code STYLE for extra savings!
One  |  Two  |  Three  |  Four  |  Five

Instead of long sleeve shirts, try:

Or 3/4 length sleeves… With plain tops, try pairing these with a printed/patterned scarf. All of these options above are available in at least 2 more colors!
One  |  Two  |  Three  |  Four  |  Five

Instead of flannel, try:

Or lightweight plaid tees… option number 3 is actually a flannel cut off for $12!
One  |  Two  |  Three  |  Four  |  Five

Instead of long jeans, try:

One  |  Two  |  Three  |  Four  |  Five

Instead of big sweaters, try:

Or off the shoulder… The middle sweater has slits down the back that are so cute!
One  |  Two  |  Three  |  Four  |  Five

Instead of cardigans, try:

One  |  Two  |  Three  |  Four  |  Five

Here are some of the ways that I style these pieces:

*Also note… you can still wear shorts! The sweater above is lightweight and has slits on the sides to make it breathable. When paired with shorts and booties, it makes the perfect transition outfit for fall.

What are some other ways that you all try to beat the heat? I would love to hear from you and get your feedback! Especially if there is something I missed!

Falling for Burgundy

I can no longer avoid the fact that fall is JUST around the corner. With a new season comes new fashion trends, which is definitely something I am looking forward to! One of my favorite trends that you will likely see everywhere this season is burgundy clothing and accessories. It is also a great transitional color to take you into the fall and through the winter. I have been seeing burgundy pieces everywhere in stores and online and I just can’t resist this timeless, classic color.

Shop my look here:
Top: Nordstrom, $47 on sale!
Jeans:  Nordstrom, $68 (similar for $25!)
Flats: Halogen, $89 (almost identical for $39)
Bag: Louise et cie, sold out from Nordstrom sale (similar from same brand, similar)
Watch: Michael Kors, old (almost identical for $34)
Lip Color: YSL Glossy Stain in Pink Rain, $36
Earrings: Baublebar, $48

I just love everything about this cold shoulder cut out top. It’s a perfect transitional piece from the cut outs on the shoulders, to the long bell sleeves, to the burgundy details in the print. The burgundy in this top is what really inspired my entire outfit and led me to style it with the burgundy accessories.

See below for more of my favorite burgundy pieces… what’s even better? EVERYTHING below is under $70!

2 Is Better Than 1

I had so much fun on this photo shoot with my beautiful and talented friend Katie! How gorgeous is Charlotte at sunset? She found the perfect spot to snap some pictures… an empty parking garage –who would have thought? It had just finished storming and cleared up for us to take pictures and the Charlotte skyline with the sunset created the perfect backdrop (there was even a rainbow and everything)!

This floral two-piece set was such a natural and easy combo to put together, creating a perfect timeless look. I liked that the print was simple and not too overwhelming. Sometimes with patterned sets, if the print is too busy it can overshadow your look completely. You definitely don’t want that –so I like to choose patterns that are more simple, subtle and/or muted. Of course to every rule there is an exception but it all depends on how you feel and how you accessorize. (You may be able to pull off a louder, bolder print if paired with neutral accessories).

While doing some Labor Day sale shopping this weekend, I found this matching top and mini skirt in my local Nordstrom store. Unfortunately, when I got home to find them online, I saw that they were both sold out. However, I decided to take pictures and post them anyway, because really anyone can pull off an effortless two-piece look and there were many more two-piece sets I found online that I loved just as much! I made sure to link them below.

Top: Nordstrom, sold out (was available in store) view similar patterned top here
Skirt: Nordstrom, sold out (also available in store)
Earrings: Baublebar, $36
Watch: Nordstrom Nixon, $225 (similar)
Bag: Kate Spade, old (similar)
Shoes: Steve Madden, $69 at DSW
Bracelets: Nordstrom, $16+

I think my favorite thing about putting together a printed combo is the versatility. I could easily wear this top with a pair of black skinnies, or wear the skirt to my corporate job with a polished black top. I could also bring out the small yellow details in the pattern with a button down yellow top. If I were feeling adventurous, I could match the skirt with a turquoise/green top… the possibilities are endless! Below are some sets that I put together from other retailers that I found online. Which ones are your favorites? I would love to hear from you!

White on Labor Day

Happy Labor Day everyone!

I can’t believe it has been over a week since my last fashion post! I have been busy as ever working with some other lifestyle bloggers and doing guest posts for them. I have really enjoyed collaborating with other women who have the same interests as I do and offering my tips and knowledge when it comes to dressing on a budget. I just did a piece for Pam with Hodge Podge Moments that you can view here.

So for today’s outfit I wanted to show off this gorgeous, white, bell sleeve romper. If you can’t tell, I am kind of on a white romper kick… just view my latest post! I think they are so flattering and so much fun to dress up with colorful (or in this case neutral) accessories! This romper is a little dressier than the last one and I just couldn’t resist the off-the-shoulder look combined with the flowy bell sleeves.

As Labor Day nears, people get the preconceived notion that you can’t wear white after this fashionable holiday. I beg to differ, but I think this would be the PERFECT outfit to wear this week/weekend! Also just FYI… the first day of fall is September 22 so we still have a solid two weeks of summertime! While it’s important to keep upcoming fall trends in mind and transitional pieces, make sure to get the most out of these last two weeks!

Shop my look here:
Romper: Nordstrom, $72 (almost identical for $28!)
Shoes: Marc Fisher, $159 (similar, similar)
Bag: Nordstrom, $45 (similar)
Earrings: Baublebar, $36 (similar)

I hope everyone is having a relaxing day! I know the rest of my day will be spent by the pool trying to get some sun! Let me know what you think of the post by leaving me a comment!
