Cali Trip – Day 2

After an exciting, but long day 1… I woke up to the smell of bacon, eggs and muffins. My sweet friend Alison woke up early and made us all breakfast (now that’s a good friend)! We needed all the energy we could get for our morning hike out towards Santa Monica and Malibu. We hiked a trail near Pacific Palisades and it was the first time I ever got to see the Pacific Ocean!

We ended up hiking a little over 2.5 miles, so it was good exercise and definitely worth it for the views! The land in the distance of those pictures is Long Beach (which we will eventually get to tomorrow). I also found my casual dream home with an infinity pool on the side of the cliff… some of the houses we saw were just so breathtaking.

After our hike, we stopped by the Eames House in Pacific Palisades. This was one of several architecture case study houses done in the 1940’s through the 60’s. This house was actually built in 1949. My friends Alison and Katie are both architects, so they knew a little bit more about case study houses, but I was able to gain a new appreciation for architecture on my trip. Shortly after we got there, the sun came out, so we were able to see a more clear view of the beach and the ocean.

Next on our stop was lunch. By the time we got to the restaurant Cafe Vida, I was so hungry (hiking really takes a lot out of you)! Apparently this place is super popular because there was kind of a long wait. I got a fresh acai smoothie to hold me over. It had all natural ingredients with strawberries, blueberries and bananas and I was in heaven. All of their food was so fresh, I just wish I could go back once a week and try EVERYTHING on their menu!

Since we were out by Santa Monica, we HAD to stop by the beach after lunch. Unfortunately it was extremely windy, which made it a lot colder. But hey, this was my first time in California so I was determined to put my feet in the Pacific Ocean. If you can’t tell by my reaction below… it was FREEZING. (And of course the wind didn’t help).

It was cool to sit on the beach and have the mountains on one side and the Santa Monica Pier on the other side. It’s definitely not something you would see on the East Coast. We didn’t spend too much time at the beach (that was for Monday), so we headed out a little early to beat the infamous LA traffic.

Once we got home, we all showered and dressed up for our sunset tour of another famous house, followed by a night out on the town. This was another case study house, that many of you may have heard of, The Stahl House. It’s been in a lot of movies and quite a number of commercials. You can certainly see why… it’s a cliff side glass house that was built for $40,000 in 1960, just above Sunset Blvd and offers the most breath-taking views of LA.

I am so glad we were able to see this! Truly one of my favorite things that I did while I was out in California. It was cool to see all of the older style decor and original cabinets, flooring, etc. Once our guide eventually kicked us out, we went towards downtown LA to El Compadre Mexican restaurant. I was really looking forward to being able to try authentic Mexican food and El Compadre did not disappoint! I had the most amazing, fresh strawberry margarita (made with REAL strawberries) and another margarita that our bartender lit on fire!

After dinner we went out to explore the bar scene. Any Vanderpump Rules fans? I was SO excited to see PUMP! I wanted to go in, but it was towards the end of the night. We spent the majority of the night at The Abbey in West Hollywood and I definitely got the full LA experience there. I also thought it was weird that there wasn’t a cover charge –but hey, I was not complaining.

We had another successful, fun and BUSY day but it was so worth it. Still a lot more on our list of things to do 🙂
